Construction firm Kier has completed the £98 million transformation of Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot for Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust.
The 11,500 sq m new building offers a range of first-class facilities to support planned, non-emergency procedures for NHS and private patients. The space includes state-of-the-art theatre, outpatient and diagnostic facilities for orthopaedics, cardiology, radiology, lithotripsy, physiotherapy, and orthodontics. In addition, the site has a primary care hub.
This latest project supports the wider ambitions of Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust and will bring some of the best planned care services in the country to local residents across Berkshire, Hampshire, and Surrey.
Kier was appointed to deliver this scheme through the p21+ framework and has utilised the latest digital technology and Building Information Modelling (BIM) when constructing the new healthcare centre. It has achieved a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) very good status with a solar farm covering a large section of the hospital’s roof. What’s more, a robust sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) is installed under the car park. Rainwater from the roof drains into a nearby balancing pool, preventing flooding and will be used to promote biodiversity in the area.
In addition, 10,000m3 of soil was repurposed – meaning no soil was imported to, or exported from site, plus 95% of all site waste was recycled.
When the new hospital is ready for patients, the existing Heatherwood Hospital buildings will be demolished.
Louisa Finlay, Director of Clients and Markets for Kier Construction, said: "Heatherwood hospital is vitally important to the Ascot community and we are incredibly proud to have transformed it, with first-class facilities that will help Frimley NHS Foundation Trust and its staff effectively treat patients.
"This is the latest project we have delivered for the Trust and draws on both our technical excellence and experience in delivering healthcare facilities across London and the South of England.
"Delivering the new hospital at Heatherwood has been a truly collaborative effort and our trusted and local supply chain partners have yet again been integral to a successful handover."
