Higgins Partnerships has announced a number of opportunities through the Government's Kickstart scheme for young people to start their career in construction.

The scheme provides funding to create new six-month jobs for 16 to 24-year-olds currently on Universal Credit and who are at risk of long term employment. It is designed to help upskill a whole new generation and give them the opportunity to start a new career in the construction industry.

Saifullah Shahid joined Higgins Partnerships at its Woolwich Reach project in Newham in July through the Kickstart scheme. As part of his role as Site Administrator he will also receive on the job training and site experience to help him progress his career.

Amy Ross, Head of Social Value at Higgins Partnerships commented: "The Kickstart scheme is an excellent opportunity to give young people the chance to experience working in a new industry, which they may not have previously thought of pursuing and explore the wealth of different careers available to them.

"As well as developing practical on the job skills and boosting job prospects for the future, this scheme will also provide personal benefits such as confidence building, working in a team and using initiative to complete a task. We are delighted that Saifullah has joined us and is enjoying his time at Woolwich Reach."

Saifullah Shahid said: "It's been amazing working at Higgins. I have learned lot about construction such as snagging, and the role of a site manager throughout the project. It’s been a great experience. My confidence levels have increased 100% and I would love to continue work with Higgins, and to one day train to become a site manager."

Higgins is building a 14-storey residential block which will deliver 75 affordable homes, of which 28 will be London Living Rent homes and 47 Shared Ownership for Notting Hill Genesis. The development also includes commercial space and overlooks the River Thames and is next to Royal Victoria Gardens.
