The City of London has appointed ENGIE to refurbish the roof at the Grade II listed Smithfield Poultry Market.
The building, which was constructed in 1953, is in a current state of disrepair, prompting a £5.7million renovation programme.
The market, which operates overnight, will remain in use throughout the project and work will involve the construction of a working platform to the underside of the roof to provide safe access and protect the occupants below. The existing copper roof coverings will be removed and replaced with a new copper roof and insulation and the existing thirty-six, 2.9m diameter rooflights will also be replaced with modern equivalents. The restored roof will guarantee the life of the building for at least another seventy years.
Additional work includes concrete repairs to the external perimeter of the dome roof and a new access and maintenance system
James Cousins, Regeneration Director for ENGIE, said: "The Smithfield Market is iconic, and we’re thrilled to be playing such an integral role in retaining the building. Future proofing our existing residential and commercial stock is imperative to supporting the UK meet its net zero carbon ambitions and projects like this, support us to achieve these goals.
"We have extensive expertise working on listed buildings and frequently deliver projects with residents or businesses still in occupation – so we are perfectly placed to deliver this for the City of London."
Work is now underway and is expected to be complete in October 2021.
