Speedy Teams Up With Galliford Try

Construction News Image
Equipment hire and services firm Speedy, has teamed up with Galliford Try Infrastructure to provide an environmentally friendly temporary power solution to a major highway improvement scheme in Leicester.

Speedy partnered with hybrid power specialists Off-Grid Energy, to provide the contractor with a site power solution utilising two diesel generators each linked to a hybrid unit, to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Since the power sources went live on the A46/A5630 works in September last year, the solution has already reduced fuel consumption by over 35,000L, and cut CO2 emissions by over 94Tonnes – the approximate annual emissions of 59 diesel cars in the UK. Compared to using a standard generator the solution has also provided a net saving to the contractor of over £6,000 over the period.

The site can be powered without the need of a generator when fewer people are using the base. The configuration also allows the opportunity for at least one of the hybrid units to provide power when certain areas of the site offices are unoccupied.

The A46/A5630 scheme led by Galliford Try Infrastructure for Leicestershire County Council involves improvements of a major connection between the A46, the Leicester local highway network, and a new area of housing in north Leicester.

Jonathan Scripps, major account manager at Speedy, said: "Construction workers are demanding that the sector does more to improve environmental sustainability, with 82% outlining it as a priority in our recent research. Galliford Try is a great example of a contractor leading the way in this space, by working alongside its suppliers to help cut emissions.

"It's excellent to see the huge emissions, fuel and cost savings already reaped since the power source was installed at the scheme. Efficient solutions like this, if installed across all construction sites, will play a major role in reducing the overall emissions from the industry. We’re look forward to working with Galliford Try and its various business divisions to cut down CO2 while using financially viable solutions."

Shaun Beales, senior site agent at Galliford Try Infrastructure, said: "The system does everything promised by the supplier. We have found this an excellent solution to a generator based system. The product has allowed us to find a commercially viable, and environmentally sustainable alternative. We have been provided with excellent recommendations and service in maximizing the product efficiency."

The power solution provided by Speedy and Off-Grid Energy also benefits from remote monitoring, reducing travel required by engineers to inspect and maintain equipment.
