A former England U20 Rugby World Cup winner is making a name for himself in the construction industry.

Tom Smallbone, who suffered an injury meaning he had to retire from a career as a professional sportsman, is the latest name to join Godwin Developments.

He joins the firm's London-based team as a new land manager, where he will concentrate on the acquisition and disposal elements of the business with an additional focus to continue the firm's work expanding its footprint down to the south coast.

Having enjoyed both club and country success in rugby, Tom has since held the position of project manager for TowerEight -working on hotel and student accommodation schemes - bringing a host of industry experience to his new position. He is also currently studying for an MBA in construction and real estate at University College of Estate Management which is RICS accredited.

Commenting on his appointment, Tom said: "I've always had a keen interest in property and throughout my career as a rugby player I continued my education and sought out experience in the industry. While playing professionally, I managed many property development side projects and gained work experience from some of the top development firms.

"Prior to my official move into the property industry, I spent seven years playing rugby professionally, some of my career highlights included playing for London Irish in the Premiership, European competition and London Scottish in the Championship.

"I am very excited to join the Godwin Developments team, one of the main reasons I was so interested in the company was due to its vast experience and portfolio in the build-to-rent (BTR) and roadside retail sectors. I am interested in working within both industries, I am looking forward to working with such a great team and getting my teeth into some fantastic developments."

James Mulcare, land director also based at Godwin Development's London office added: "We are delighted to welcome Tom to our team, he brings with him a wealth of experience in the industry as well as a passion and drive for property development.

"Godwin Developments has seen huge growth over the past year, and it speaks volumes that we are already able to expand our workforce within London, just a year after establishing in the capital. The London office allows us to accommodate further expansion plans and look to expand our reach in Godwin's key sectors."
