The construction of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge in Woking is moving forward.
Contractor Farrans is leading the project, which will see a structure built across the Basingstoke Canal in Chobham Road.
The foundations have just been laid for the bridge that is being built alongside the existing road bridge. This will make it more accessible for people to follow the canal towpath, instead of crossing the busy highway.
The bridge design will follow the characteristics of the surrounding area, featuring gabion walls, a non-slip surface, steel handrails with built in bat-friendly lighting and associated landscaping.
The waterway was drained between Skew Bridge at Lockfield Drive and Monument Road Bridge to enable the construction to take place. Temporary dams and pumps were used to keep the water back while diggers and other machinery operated on the canal bed.
When complete, this project will boost connectivity in the Woking area.
While the works are taking place, pedestrians have been asked to make use of a ramp which crosses Chobham Road. A diversion between the WWF-UK's Living Planet Centre and Brook House Common has been signposted.
Local councillor Ayesha Azad added: "Constructing a new pedestrian and cycle footbridge linking either side of the canal will create an uninterrupted towpath that will not only improve connectivity, but also encourage more people to use the path."
