Work has begun on a multi-million pound contract to deliver the Gateway South, Coventry development.
Buckingham Group Contracting was selected for the works, which will comprise industrial and logistics uses, on a mix of agricultural land, two existing licensed waste tips, an existing HGV yard, and a former sewage treatment works.
This forms the second phase of the 'Coventry Gateway' scheme, where Buckingham Group is already the contractor for the Whitley South infrastructure that includes a new road bridge over the A45 dual carriageway.
Gateway South, Coventry will be constructed on a 450-acre site adjacent to Coventry Airport. The works commence in January 2020 and will be delivered over the next three years.
The new contract was awarded by Coventry and Warwickshire Development Partnership (CWDP LLP), which is wholly owned by key client SEGRO.
This will see the delivery of an adoptable access road of some 35,000 m2, 6,000,000 m3 of earthworks, foul drainage system, new ecological habitats and a new 230-acre country park.
Ultimately the development will provide some 3.7 million ft2 of large B2 / B8 warehousing that is planned for the site and is naturally of major interest for our building operations.
Andrew Pilsworth, Business Unit Director, SEGRO said: "Gateway South, Coventry is truly an excellent location. It's well-connected, close to major population centres and it's one of a small number of sites that can accommodate our long-term vision of creating a high-quality industrial and logistics park.
"We're pleased to count some of the biggest names in logistics and industrial amongst our valued customers. We look forward to engaging with them to make Gateway South, Coventry a great success in the coming years."
Ian McSeveney, Group Director, Civil Engineering added: "We are delighted to have secured this exciting and challenging project. We look forward to continuing our relationship with SEGRO to deliver this major manufacturing and logistics development that could, when complete, create more than 5,000 jobs."
Gateway South, Coventry will be SEGRO's latest UK big box development to follow on from the successful SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway, a 700-acre development with planning consent for up to 6,000,000 sq ft of warehousing and logistics accommodation.
