A proposal to build 200 new homes in Barking has been approved by councillors.
Barking and Dagenham Council's planning committee voted to bring forward the development of new homes on the west side of the Gascoigne Estate.
This Abbey Road project will see 201 homes built, comprising of 89 one-bedroom, 88 two-bedroom and 24 three-bedroom apartments. There are also plans for a new children's play area, over 360 new cycling parking spaces and electric car charging points.
As part of the proposal, the development will connect to the forthcoming Barking Town Centre District Heating Network and feature solar panels, resulting in 40 per cent reduction in carbon emissions.
Wates Residential has signed on to deliver the development, with the firm's team now moving on site to prepare for the project.
Paul Nicholls, Managing Director for Wates Residential, said: "Today's decision marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Gascoigne Estate in the delivery of much needed high quality new homes for local people, because we believe that everyone deserves a great place to live. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Be First to help realise this vision and also look forward to working with the local community to deliver education, training and skills opportunities as we commence work on site."
The first phase of the redevelopment is due to start on site in January 2020, with completion expected Spring 2022.
