More than 800 people have been made redundant at the £650 million MGT biomass plant in Teeside over the last month, prompting construction union Unite to demand answers.

Client Technicas Reundias and main contractor Atlantic Projects Company (APC) are delivering the project, with a skeleton workforce of around 350 workers left on the site.

The project is still 18 months away from completion, with concerns growing the site could be mothballed.

Unite national officer Ian Woodland has written to Technicas Reundias and APC for answers.

Ian Woodland said: "In the last few weeks 800 jobs have been lost from the site and the remaining workers fear there are more cuts to come.

"These job losses have resulted in 800 families losing a breadwinner and Teesside becoming decidedly poorer.

"The site remains half completed. Workers and the community across Teesside want to know what is happening.

"These layoffs must not result in attacks on workers conditions or any move away from hiring local labour.

"Technicas Reudnias and APC need to provide urgent answers to Unite's concerns."
