A £27 million project to tackle congestion on peak train services is set to begin in the East of England later this year.

The upgrades between Cambridge and King's Lynn include two platform extensions at Waterbeach and a platform extension at Littleport to 167 metres.

Once the work is complete, eight-car services can be introduced during peak times to provide more seats and a better experience for passengers.

The work will also improve connectivity for intermediate stations, and support local development and regeneration plans along the Cambridge rail corridor.

Preparation work will start later this summer, with main works scheduled to begin in October. The project is then expected to be complete next summer.

Contractor VolkerFitzpatrick and Network Rail are hosting a number of drop-in sessions over the next few weeks for locals to find out more information on the project.
