A new school is set to be built in Peterborough to help the city cope with a recent population boom.

Work has begun on Hampton Lakes Primary School, which will see a new facility developed for 420 children living in Hampton East and the wider Hampton area of the City. It will also accommodate 26 nursery places.

The new school will open in 2019 and operate from Hampton College Primary, pending completion of the new building which will be in operation from September 2020.

Peterborough City Council's construction partner Interserve is delivering the project under a £6.4 million contract.

This development is being completed on behalf of Hampton Academies Trust, Peterborough City Council and the Department for Education.

It also represents a major educational priority for the council.

Councillor Lynne Ayres, Peterborough City Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: "As the fourth fastest growing city in the country, the need to create extra school spaces is an urgent one and we are actively working to address this.

"We are committed to providing sufficient classroom spaces to ensure that the educational needs of children and young people in the city continues to be met."
