Balfour Beatty Wins Major Contract In Aberdeen

UK construction giant Balfour Beatty has won a major contract in Aberdeen.

The firm will work to renovate the city's historic Union Terrace Gardens under a £25.7 million contract.

The scheme forms part of Aberdeen City Council's City Centre Masterplan project which will transform the Victorian park in Aberdeen into an inclusive 21st Century space; improving access, amenity and activity whilst enhancing Union Terrace Garden's heritage features.

Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the construction of three new pavilions, a new accessible walkway into the gardens from Union Street, as well as associated landscaping and lighting. The company will also sympathetically refurbish the historic Victorian Union Terrace arches.

Hector MacAulay, Balfour Beatty's Regional Managing Director of Scotland and Ireland, said: "We are looking forward to working with Aberdeen City Council to transform the historic Union Terrace Gardens, which on completion will significantly contribute to the Council's City Centre Masterplan.

"Our construction expertise coupled with our experience in regenerating public spaces makes us ideally positioned to deliver the three new pavilions and sympathetically upgrade this much-loved historic space which will benefit the local community and visitors alike for years to come."

Union Terrace Garden's regeneration will complement other major infrastructure projects nearing completion, including the Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) and the redeveloped Aberdeen Art Gallery.

Works are due to commence this summer ahead of scheduled completion in summer 2021.
