Wates Tackles Carbon Emissions In Bedfordshire

Construction News Image
Wates has planted 1,000 trees in Luton to help tackle the carbon emissions caused by its construction work.

A total of 20 employees from the company's Luton office planted the trees at Lewsey Park.

While offsetting the carbon emissions created during Wates' projects in Bedfordshire and its surrounding areas, the trees will also help the creation of a new woodland wildlife habitat within Lewsey Park.

All the trees planted are native British species including Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Oak and Rowan.

The tree planting event formed part of Wates' Treeathlon Challenge, which will see the construction company plant 15,000 trees in the UK by 2022, in partnership with the Carbon Footprint Company and The Conservation Volunteers.

Ian Vickers, Regional Managing Director, Wates Construction Home Counties, said: "This tree planting initiative underpins our perpetual commitment to being a responsible business and seeking opportunities to support the local community and restore the natural environment. This new area of woodland will continue to flourish long after our current construction projects have completed, resulting in a new habitat for local wildlife and offsetting the carbon emissions created while creating much-needed new buildings for our clients in Bedfordshire and beyond."
