The number of new private homes registered at the beginning of 2019 has fallen, with ongoing uncertainties surrounding Brexit affecting the sector.

Figures from leading warranty and insurance provider NHBC showed 8,913 new homes were registered in the private sector at the beginning of 2019, in comparison to 9,214 in 2018.

Despite this, the figures show an overall 9% increase in new registered homes, with over 1,000 more in the affordable sector this year than in 2018.

NHBC Chief Executive Steve Wood said: "As a standalone month, the January figures show some solid growth, with a particularly good uplift in the affordable sector.

"However, it is clear that Brexit uncertainties are affecting the private sector and this will impact the months ahead. NHBC will continue to work to help the industry face these challenges and to keep the focus on the quality of new homes."
