Morgan Sindall Partners With ABP For Port Of Southampton Expansion

Construction News Image
Morgan Sindall has partnered with ABP Southampton to help deliver a multi-million pound expansion at the Port of Southampton.

The new appointment of Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure signals the next stage of the £50m expansion.

The new facility will be located between the National Oceanography Centre and the Itchen River within the Eastern Dock.

Port owner ABP is investing a further £15 million to transform and expand the port's vehicle handling facilities. This will be the eighth multi-storage deck facility at Southampton.

Last year, Morgan Sindall delivered the port's sixth and seventh multi-deck facilities, including the new Pacific Terminal. The two facilities were executed simultaneously and have created almost 10,000 additional spaces.

The multi deck storage project is due for completion in July 2019.

The Port of Southampton is the UK's hub for automotive, handling exports worth £40 billion each year.

Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure area director for the South, Jon Daines, said: "Over the last five years we're very proud to have been re-appointed by ABP to deliver a series of expansions to the Port of Southampton.

"This latest expansion to the port's vehicle handling facilities will cement its position as the UK's primary hub for automotive shipping, enabling British car manufacturers to reach global markets.

"Our team has developed an effective collaborative partnership with ABP over the years, working to deliver their strategic vision for the future of the Port of Southampton.

"We're very pleased to be working with ABP once again on this exciting project, which will build on the Southampton's reputation as a global import and export hub."

ABP Southampton Director Alastair Welch, added: "This investment in the port allows us to meet the growing demands of the automotive industry into the future. By working with Morgan Sindall to construct the multi-deck facility we are further strengthening our position as the UK's number one export port."

Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure's sister-company Baker Hicks will oversee the design and engineering of the scheme.
