Work Continues On £21m East Yorkshire Flood Alleviation Scheme

Construction News Image
Work is continuing on the £21 million Anlaby and East Ella Flood Alleviation Scheme (AEEFAS) in East Yorkshire.

NM Group has entered into the final phase of the project, which is set to reduce the risk of flooding for thousands of residents and businesses in the Hull and Haltemprice areas once finished in mid-2020.

Work on the final phase involves creating a flow entry structure at Kerry Pit near Westella Valley and a large 115,000 cubic metre flood storage Lagoon located on the site of the old Sydney Smith School in Anlaby. A new 1.8-metre-wide tunnelled storm culvert will connect these to divert water away from residential areas before reconnecting with the existing Western Drain at Marr Bridge.

In addition, the final phase will include construction of numerous flow control and outfall structures, as well as a new watercourse, maintenance access roads, highway drainage headwalls and an energy dissipation unit. NM Group is also responsible for reconstructing several drain crossings, which will significantly reduce out-of-bank and property flooding in the area.

Plans are also in place to provide recreational and amenity facilities for local residents on the new Tranby Lagoon site on First Lane in Anlaby.

Chris Davis, Framework Manager of the Highways Division at NM Group, said: "This is an extensive and important project; one that when complete will better protect local residents and businesses from the often-devastating effects of flooding."
