Work has started on a £1.8 million water network improvement scheme near the Crown Point Retail Park in Leeds.
The six-week scheme will involve installing 'smart' valves on Hunslet Lane, with a total of six to be fitted in key areas of the water pipe network in the city centre.
Similar work has already been completed near to the University of Leeds and Leeds General Infirmary. The remotely controlled ‘smart' valves are being fitted to help control the flow of water, which will prevent pressure surges that can occasionally lead to burst pipes and supply disruptions.
Yorkshire Water's Communications Advisor, Mark Allsop, said: "We've liaised closely with Leeds City Council highways department regarding every aspect of this essential work and they've stipulated we need to complete this work now, during the school holidays, to minimise traffic disruption.
"To carry out this work safely we'll need to close the outside lanes of Hunslet Lane, in both directions, next to the central reservation and to the west of Crown Point Road junction, 24 hours a day whilst we complete this scheme. The inner lanes and the slip roads in to the Crown Point Retail Park will not be affected."
