Highways England has signed a deal with 11 contractors to deliver up to £3.3 billion of road surfacing works across motorways and trunk roads.

Over the next four years, the framework deal will see work awarded to selected firms to address poor road surfaces across England’s motorway and major A roads, without having to go through a lengthy bidding process.

Highways England’s Executive Director of Operations, Nick Harris, said since Highways England was created in 2015, more than 4,400 miles of road surface has been replaced.

"This new arrangement will help us tackle uneven road surfaces faster, in a more cost effective and efficient way – keeping journeys safer and offering smoother journeys for the millions of drivers who use our roads every day."

The programme is divided into six geographical areas with two lots per area. For each region, two firms will deliver major resurfacing works valued at more than £1m, while elsewhere two will deliver renewal works valued at under £1m.

The arrangement also enables local authorities to utilise the services of the contractors, facilitating greater collaboration.
