The third and final phase of the £178 million Norwich Northern Distributor Road (NNDR) scheme has officially opened to traffic.
The final 5.25km section, from the A1151 Wroxham Road to the Postwick Hub and the A47, has completed the 19.5km of new dual carriageway around the north and east of Norwich. The route was delivered by Balfour Beatty in partnership with Norfolk County Council and is available for use from today, 17 April.
The first two phases were opened ahead of schedule last year; phase one from the A1067 Fakenham Road to the A140 Cromer Road in November, phase two from Cromer Road to the A1151 Wroxham Road just before Christmas.
Overall the scheme, which is now to be known as Broadland Northway, has involved the delivery of 20km of dual carriageway including the construction of 13 roundabouts and eight bridges.
Phil Clifton, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's Highways business, said: "We are delighted that the Broadland Northway is now open to traffic and the local community can experience the extensive benefits of the scheme.
"While the project was not without its challenges, we have deployed innovative solutions to safely deliver the route, which has created a positive legacy for the environment and the Norfolk community in the form of skills development and education for local young people. The project's success is a testament to the skills, expertise, and collaborative working relationship between the fully integrated delivery team and Norfolk County Council."
Martin Wilby, Chairman of the council's Environment, Development & Transport Committee, described the road as "an important piece in Norfolk's infrastructure jigsaw that will help secure a better, brighter and more prosperous future for Norfolk".
