BAM has been chosen as the contractor to deliver a new £35 million teaching and learning centre for the University of Southampton.
Work is already underway at the site on Salisbury Road, with the area prepared for development by reconfiguring car parking, diverting underground services and demolishing Building 58a. The building is scheduled to open early in 2019.
Designed by Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios, the seven-storey building will be set across two wings and include a 250-seat lecture theatre, a range of seminar and teaching rooms, independent study space, a computer suite and a café.
The facility forms part of a long term major masterplan for the University, which recently saw the conclusion of Chamberlain Hall of Residence and Boldrewood Innovation Campus.
Anthony Nagle, Construction Director at BAM, said: "This scheme is logistically complex because it is surrounded by a public theatre, a bus interchange and examination centres among others. It is part of the University's wider masterplan for this quadrant of the campus.
"There are plenty of challenges for the construction team. But it is exactly the sort of scheme BAM has expertise and experience of, and that we can handle sensitively. Southampton is a strong base for us with a local supply chain and we have a good track record working with the University on some of its past schemes. I'm delighted that the University of Southampton has again appointed BAM as its partner, and we are well under way with our partnership."
