BAM Construction Training: Get Your CPCS A17D 360 Telehandler Before Category Expires

Construction News Image
In response to CPCS's recent announcement about retiring the Telescopic Handler – All Sizes inc 360 Slew (A17D) category from the scheme on 28 March 2018, BAM Construction Training have released additional course dates to give operatives the opportunity to renew their tickets before changes take effect and the A17D category is retired.

In a bulletin released on 13th February 2018, CPCS stated that 'a review was undertaken on the category due to the nature in which slew types have evolved since the Telescopic Handler category was first introduced many years ago. Back then the plant was predominately used for fork use as with traditional telehandlers but are now increasingly being used as a crane with a drum hoist and rope.'

This new stand-a-lone category of Telescopic Handler 360 Slew (A77) will supersede Telescopic Handler inc 360 Slew (A17D) which will be retired from the scheme.

It is important to note that we expect the price for training and testing for the new A77 category to increase substantially in comparison to the current A17D category.

So What Does This Mean For You After 28 March 2018?

If you do not hold the A17D category on your ticket, you'll be required to complete the new A77 Telescopic Handler 360 Slew category from. This includes an extended theoretical assessment and a 3 hour practical assessment which will cover fork-mounted loads, free-on-wheels, pick-and-carry duties, and fixed-hook / hoist-rope suspended loads. On achievement of A77 you will also be automatically awarded A17C and A17E.

If you hold the A17D category on your ticket, you'll be required to undertake the Transitional Assessment for A77 (A89) to be awarded the A77, A17C (non-slew) and A17E (suspended loads) at the point of renewal. Those who do not undertake the A77 (A89) Transitional Assessment at the point of renewal or upgrade will only be awarded the A17C (non-slew) category.

What Are Your Options Before 28 March 2018?

If you do not currently hold a Telehandler ticket you can achieve the A17D by attending one of our 4-day foundation courses. We have three remaining CPCS A17D Telehandler (inc 360 slew) foundation courses running in Wokingham (dates below). Upon achieving you will receive a CPCS Trained Operator Red Card for Telehandler (inc 360 slew) which will be valid for 2 years.

If you currently hold a A17C Telehandler (exc 360 slew) card we can offer you a one-day course to upgrade/renew your red card for a further two years. We have scheduled in one-day A17D courses in February and March (dates below) that will provide you with a half day practical training followed by a practical assessment at the end of the day. Upon achieving the practical assessment you will receive a CPCS Trained Operator Red Card for A17D Telehandler – all sizes inc 360 slew – which will be valid for two years.
