Graham Construction has started work on a new Community Centre in East Finchley, North London.
The scheme on Tarling Road will replace the Old Barn community centre and provide a shared space for local community groups. The new facility is expected to open in autumn 2018.
Features of the hub will include 980 square metres of functional space, as well as a learning space, a large meeting hall and café with seating area.
Designs for the centre were developed through consultation with residents, which included two public exhibitions to showcase how the building might look.
Speaking at a recent visit to the Tarling Road site to mark the start of construction works, the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Salinger said: "We're delighted that work is now underway on the new Community Centre in Tarling Road. This new centre will provide a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that all local community groups can apply to use.
"I was greatly impressed by the plans that were presented to me during my visit and I have no doubt that the centre will become a highly valued facility for communities in Barnet."
Rob Joyce, Graham Construction's London Office Director, said: "The Tarling Road Community Hub reinforces and supports the London Borough of Barnet's commitment to providing residents with new and improved facilities. We look forward to working closely with the borough and wider project team to bring forward these works on time and to the highest quality."
