Tunnelling Work On £1.2bn Northern Line Extension Complete

Tunnelling work on London Underground's £1.2 billion Northern Line Extension project is now complete.

The Amy Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through at Kennington on Wednesday, 08 November.

The milestone means two 3.2km tunnels have been created from Battersea Power Station, via Nine Elms and the project is on completion in 2020.

Once finished, the development will add new capacity to the Capital's transport network as well as enable the regeneration of the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea areas, spurring economic growth by supporting around 25,000 new jobs and more than 20,000 new homes.

David Darcy, project director for the Ferrovial Agroman Laing O'Rourke joint venture, said: "This break-through is a major milestone in the complex engineering project to extend London's Underground network to new parts of the Capital.

"The integrated Ferrovial Agroman Laing O'Rourke team is delighted to have reached this programme landmark and has taken another important step towards successful delivery of the Northern Line Extension."

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: "Today's breakthrough is a momentous moment for a project that is going to bring huge benefits to south London. The Northern Line Extension is not only going to make travelling to Battersea and Nine Elms easier, it's also going to bring tens of thousands of new jobs and homes to the area. It's another great example of why new infrastructure is so vital to London's success and the wider economy."
