Council Begins Search For Bidder To Deliver £220m Highways Contract

Construction News Image
Telford & Wrekin Council has started searching for a bidder to deliver its £220 million highways maintenance contract.

The deal is for an initial period of seven years and includes reactive and planned maintenance of roads, footpaths, structures, signs and drainage, with an option to extend for a further seven years.

A preferred contractor is expected to be named in September 2018, with work starting in April 2019, replacing the council's current deal with TWS.

Cllr Angela McClements said: "A strong infrastructure is needed to keep the borough moving, as people have jobs to get to, schools to attend, friends to see and homes to return to at the end of the day.

"Altogether we look after 626 miles of road, 132 miles of cycle ways, 135 bridges, 120 roundabouts, 16,000 signs as well as other infrastructure assets. We have already invested in improving our footpaths, street lights and roads and we hope that the new highways contract will help us to provide better value for money for taxpayers and a real focus on improving performance and quality of work."
