Up to £400 million is being invested to boost transport infrastructure across the north of England and the Midlands.

Chancellor Philip Hammond will confirm the investment for the Northern Powerhouse during a Conservative Party conference in Manchester later today, 02 October.

It is understood £300m will be set aside to upgrade connections between cities to ensure they are linked to the High Speed Two (HS2) rail link between London and the north. An extra £100m will go towards improving road connections and reduce traffic congestion in the region.

In his speech, Mr Hammond will say: "This investment will go towards ensuring HS2 infrastructure can link up with future Northern Powerhouse and Midlands rail projects - helping the towns and cities of the North reach their full potential".
