Morgan Sindall Sweco is continuing work on a £17 million upgrade project at a water treatment works (WTW) in Scarborough.

The modernisation scheme at Irton WTW involves installing new upgraded equipment at the facility to meet stricter water quality standards. The 150-year-old borehole onsite supplies between 15 and 23 million litres of drinking water to residents every day.

Speaking after a visit to the site to see how work is progressing, Local MP Robert Goodwill said: "The investment in the Irton facility that supplies us all with clean tap water is yet another example of how Yorkshire Water continue to invest to maintain the highest standards of both domestic water supplies and waste water treatment.

"More than 15,000 tonnes of water per day is a massive demand and that can only grow with new housing and industrial development in the region."

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, with the new equipment operational by summer 2018.
