Crane Collapses In Reading Town Centre

A crane has collapsed into a former Primark store in Reading.

The incident occurred just before 2pm in West Street on Saturday, 29 July.

Police said the 35-metre call crane has now been stabilised, however the jib of the structure has been damaged.

Expert engineers have been called in from the Netherlands to assess the situation, however it may take a number of days to repair the jib and remove the crane from the scene.

Superintendent Robert France said: "A total of 62 residents were re-homed by Reading Borough Council overnight, with other residents preferring to arrange to stay with friends and family.

"A small number of properties in West Street also remain inaccessible due to ongoing work to recover the crane. We apologise for any inconvenience to residents, however our main priority is your safety. Thankfully, no-one has been injured during the incident."
