Britcon has won a £280,000 contract to upgrade the main entrance of Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

The 18-week scheme will see access widened on Barnsley Road from two to three lanes, as well as improving pedestrian facilities including lighting and bus stops.

The project is being carried out on behalf of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust. It marks the second contract with the Trust for Britcon after it completed a £700,000 car park expansion scheme at the Northern General and The Jessop Wing.

The contractor is one of three firms appointed to the four-year Contractors' Framework, which aims to improve hospital facilities over the next five years.

Ian Chapman of the Yorkshire office of Britcon, said: "We are pleased to secure our second contract on the Framework for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Due to the nature of the 24-hour operation at the hospitals we are working at best efficiency to accommodate continued access to the public and critical ambulance routes."
