Morrison Utility Services (MUS) has started installing a new water main in Seacroft, Leeds.
The company is delivering the project from Barwick Road roundabout to the entrance of the new development at the rear of Seacroft Hospital. Work is expected to take up to 26 weeks to complete.
The project is part of Yorkshire Water's plans to install almost 2,000 metres of new water mains in the area.
Emily Brady from Yorkshire Water said: "We appreciate there may be some disruption as we carry out this essential work and we'd like to apologise in advance to anyone who is affected.
"We're working hard to keep any disruption to a minimum and our service partners will carry out the work as quickly and professionally as possible. I'd like to thank local residents in advance for their patience while we complete this work."
