The £1 billion transformation of London Bridge Station has been awarded an industry accolade.

The project secured the 'Greatest Contribution to London prize' at the Institution of Civil Engineering Awards 2017 in the city last week.

The scheme saw Arcadis working as lead consultant under a joint venture contract with WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff to deliver one of the most complex and ambitious rail station redevelopments in the UK to date.

The project forms part of Network Rail's £6.5bn Thameslink Programme and aims to increase capacity via new platforms, a new concourse, and developing a bigger and better station for passengers.

Awards judges praised the project as being "transformational", with the scheme creating not only a station, but a new space in London for visitors and residents.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: "I would like to congratulate all shortlisted projects in the ICE London Civil Engineering Awards, not least the team behind the redevelopment of London Bridge Station.

"This transformation included building a new concourse the size of Wembley Stadium: a truly remarkable feat and something which will help ensure our transport network can cope with London's rising population."
