Work is to begin on a £1.65 million road resurfacing scheme in Wakefield.

Contractors will lay over 10,000 tonnes of new surfacing material over a five-mile stretch of the southbound carriageway on the A1 between Ferrybridge and Barnsdale Bar.

The two-week project will get underway today, 21 March. Work will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am during the week, and between 9pm and 10am on weekends. Diversions will be in place.

In addition, one mile of lane a at Darrington will need to remain closed during the day on 25 – 26 March to allow deeper layers of resurfacing material to cool before the lane can be reopened.

Highways England project manager Martin Barnes said: "This project will provide drivers with smoother and safer journeys along this stretch of the A1 between Ferrybridge and Barnsdale Bar.

"Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic is kept to a minimum. We are carrying out this work overnight while traffic levels are at their lowest."
