Milestone Reached On £7.5m Plymouth Student Halls Scheme

Construction News Image
Morgan Sindall has reached a major milestone on a student accommodation scheme in Plymouth.

The contractor held a topping out ceremony for the £7.5 million four-storey development located next to the historic Royal Eye Infirmary Hospital.

Representatives from Maple Grove Developments, Yorvale and the Morgan Sindall project team were joined by guests including representatives from Plymouth Albion Rugby Club, QSPM consultants and Mitchell Architects at the event.

The scheme, which will accommodate 165 students, includes a collection of modern cluster apartments, containing bedrooms, communal kitchen areas and modular bathroom pods, as well as studio rooms with their own kitchen area. The student block will also include a gym, a communal area, study areas and laundry facilities on the ground floor.

The building will be clad with traditional brickwork and include a mansard style roof, characterised by dormer windows in the lower slope.

Dave Haskell, Area Director at Morgan Sindall, said: "As this latest milestone shows, the new student accommodation block is really starting to take shape. The building has been carefully designed to complement the neighbouring Grade II listed Royal Infirmary building, while housing comfortable, convenient and attractive student accommodation and facilities."

Chris Evenson, Managing Director at Maple Grove Developments, added: "The topping out ceremony coincided with the show apartment being available to view. Both events are an indication of how well the project is progressing and Morgan Sindall is delivering what is an intensive development on a tight site."
