£300m Ferrybridge Multifuel Facility Reaches Milestone

A major milestone has been reached at the £300 million Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 facility in West Yorkshire.

The energy-from-waste scheme has successfully processed one million tonnes of fuel since beginning operations in July 2015.

Jointly owned by SSE and Wheelabrator Technologies, the plant uses waste derived fuel to generate clean, sustainable electricity which can power up to 160,000 homes.

Work on a second multifuel plant next to Ferrybridge 1 has already started and completion is scheduled for 2019.

Colin Drew, Ferrybridge Multifuel Plant Manager, said: "One million tonnes of residual waste processed is a key milestone in the operational life of the plant, a milestone of which the whole team are proud.

"This facility is highly efficient and is successfully diverting hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill each year."
