Lovell has started groundwork on a new £100 million urban village project in Cardiff.
The contractor is delivering 800 homes on a 53-acre brownfield site close to the city centre, previously the Arjo Wiggins Paper Mill.
The Mill, Canton scheme is being developed by Lovell in partnership with Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association. Overall, Lovell will provide 358 homes for open market sale, while Tirion will provide 442 homes for rent.
The first homes are scheduled to be ready for tenants this autumn, with rented homes completed next spring. Roads and other infrastructure for the development are set to be completed in early summer.
Overall, the project will create over 1,000 local jobs, including apprenticeships and other training opportunities.
Lovell regional managing director Kate Rees said: "To see construction work under way at The Mill, Canton, is genuinely exciting and marks an important milestone for the impressive new community now starting to take shape in west Cardiff.
"The development is not only creating 800 much-needed new homes but also bringing multiple social and economic benefits for the area through new jobs and training opportunities as well as support for local community organisations. We’re all thrilled to see work beginning on the first homes."
