Work is continuing on the £117 million New Wear Crossing project in Sunderland.

The scheme's contractors, Farrans Construction and Victor Buyck Steel Construction (FVB), will lift the 100-metre centrepiece pylon into position over the next two weeks, depending on whether conditions.

The 1,550-tonne A-frame tower will be raised during a 24-hour planned operation and preparation works for the lifting phase are taking place this week.

Once raised, FVB will spend several weeks securing the structure to the foundations, in preparation for the next section of bridge deck to be pulled out across the river this spring.

The New Wear Crossing, which is scheduled for completion in spring 2018, will significantly improve important transport links to the city centre and the Port of Sunderland, open up land for regeneration and attract investment into the city.
