Changes to how the industry pays grants to construction companies could help small to medium sized (SME) firms, according to the National Federation of Builders (NFB).

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has revealed plans to introduce a new automated grant payments system in April 2018.

The NFB said it believes the new method will make matters easier for SME companies by simplifying the "complex" process.

The organisation added SME's are "crucial" to tackling the skills shortage, as they help train local apprentices, employ local workers, and boost local economies. In addition, smaller firms have a better understanding of local communities due to operating close to their head offices.

Richard Beresford, chief executive of the NFB, said: "By reducing complexity in claiming grants, this will encourage SMEs to claim and secure more funding so they can train the next generation in the skills the industry will need."
