Plans have been approved for a major redevelopment project at Ilford Station.

Work to build a new station building, as part of the Crossrail programme, was given the go-ahead by Redbridge Council.

Proposals include a new facility featuring a glass façade, a new ticket hall with a wide entrance and more ticket gates, new lifts, longer platforms, improved lighting, signage, customer information points, CCTV and overhead information screens. Further improvements will be carried out to prepare the station for Elizabeth line services.

Once further detailed design work has taken place, the construction contract will be awarded later this year. It is estimated work will begin in early 2018, taking around 18 months to complete.

Matthew White, Crossrail Surface Director said: "The striking façade, spacious ticket hall and new lifts will making travelling through Ilford station a vastly improved experience for the thousands of passengers who use it every day."

Matthew Steele, Crossrail Programme Director at Network Rail, added: "We are delivering major upgrades to the track, signalling and stations between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield to prepare for the introduction of new trains from May. The approval of the proposed design for a new station building at Ilford is another major milestone in the transformation of this vital stretch of railway."
