Plans by the Government to build thousands of new 'Starter Homes' have been welcomed by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said the initiative will help first time buyers "get a foot on the housing ladder".

Overall, 30 areas across England will receive funding from the £1.2 billion Starter Homes Land Fund to build new developments on brownfield sites.

While welcoming a further announcement to develop 14 new 'garden villages', Mr Berry stated further measures are required in order to overturn the long-term under-supply of new homes.

"Central to this must be getting small and medium-sized (SME) builders delivering more new homes," he said.

"For instance, the announcement of 14 'garden villages' and more garden towns needs to be backed up by implementation plans which provide opportunities to SME builders as well as the large companies."
