Plans have been approved for a new £50 million Cardiff University student hub.

The 'Centre for Student Life' facility will be built on the Cathays Campus and construction is scheduled to begin in 2017.

Designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios), the building will comprise of a central hub for student support services as well as a modern, flexible social learning spaces and 550-seat lecture theatre.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Riordan said: "This is a major investment in our students and their learning experience.

"Our students and staff are not the only beneficiaries because this will be a landmark building for the people and city of Cardiff."

Lead architect Tom Jarman said: "Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios are delighted that the Centre for Student Life at Cardiff University has been granted planning permission and we very much look forward to taking the project to the next stages.

"The scheme remains true to the original competition concepts and we are excited to take one step closer to seeing it come to fruition."

The development is scheduled for completion for the 2019/2020 academic year.
