A company has been prosecuted after a worker sustained serious injuries during a bedroom extension project in Durham.
Walter Thompson (Contractors) Limited (WTL) of Construction House, Northallerton, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 22(1)(a) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007. It was fined £33,000 with over £12,552 in costs.
Durham Crown Court heard how WTL was acting as Principal Contractor for the 47-bed expansion of the Ramside Hall Hotel on 15 December 2014.
During work to install concrete floor slabs, a worker was struck in the jaw by a crowbar after it became trapped between two of the slabs. He suffered a head injury, including lacerations to the head and jaw as well as dislocated teeth.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that WTL had failed to adequately plan and manage the installation of the two floor slabs.
