A metal supply company has been prosecuted after a worker sustained serious injuries to his hand on a drilling machine.
Amtek Aluminium Castings (Witham) Limited, of Freebournes Road, Witham, Essex, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. It was fined £250,000 with over £12,632 in costs.
Chelmsford Crown Court how an employee was drilling a hole in a casting at the company's site in Essex on 16 December 2014.
However, during this work, his glove became caught on a moving drill bit and his hand was dragged into the drill. He suffered injuries to his hand which required a skin graft and was off work for two months.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the incident found the machine was badly guarded and poorly maintained. In addition, the operator was not properly trained or supervised.
