Contractors are to begin resurfacing the northbound A1 in North Yorkshire as part of a £380 million carriageway reconstruction project.

Work on the A1 Leeming to Barton scheme begun in 2014 and will see the existing dual carriageway replaced with a new three-lane motorway. Overall, a new continuous motorway-standard route will be created between London and Newcastle, including the M1 and A1M.

As part of the scheme, contractors will lay over 1,100 tonnes of new road surface to build the northbound carriageway.

In order to carry out the works, the A1 will be closed from 8pm – 6am between junction 50 (Leeming Bar) and Catterick North from 26 – 27 November. The southbound carriageway will remain open.

Highways England project manager Tom Howard said: "Our contractors will be replacing the existing carriageway with a new road surface which is why it is essential we close this section of the A1.

"We are advising people to plan their journeys, and would like to thank drivers for their patience.

"When the whole project is complete, the section of the A1 between Leeming and Barton will be upgraded to a three-lane motorway, tackling congestion and improving journey times."
