Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron has been selected to design a new £108 million building for the Royal College of Art (RCA).
The practice was chosen after winning a competition to design the structure at the College's new Battersea South campus.
The 15,000 sq m building will sit alongside the existing Dyson Building and Clore Innovation Centre, and the Sackler fine arts facilities in Battersea. It will offer new programmes at the intersection of design and science, such as robotics, wearable technologies, the application of 'smart materials' into new product areas, and City design.
The RCA will now work alongside Herzog & de Meuron and Mott Macdonald & Equals Consulting, who are leading the multidisciplinary professional team, to develop the initial concept design.
Dr Paul Thompson, Chair of the Architectural Selection Panel, said: "We set out a competition to find the very best architect to crystallise our vision for a new heart to the Battersea campus; we were very impressed by Herzog & de Meuron's mastery of our brief. We are looking forward to working with Herzog & de Meuron to develop a concept, in consultation with our partners and stakeholders."
