Planning permission has been granted for a new affordable housing development in West Thamesmead, London.
Designed by architects Pitman Tozer, 'The Reach' will feature a 66-home mixed-used development as part of the Greater London Authority's £47.5 million investment for Thamesmead in line with its Housing Zone programme.
It will include a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes including a communal garden and a commercial unit on the ground floor. In addition, the project will have green credentials such as photovoltaics, a green roof, Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR), cycle parking and electric car charging points.
The project is being delivered by Peabody Housing Association and work is expected to begin on site in the new year. Completion is scheduled for December 2018.
Plans for the scheme were approved after the London Borough of Bexley gave planning permission for 1,500 new homes to be built in South Thamesmead.
Peabody's Executive Director for Thamesmead, John Lewis, said: "We are delighted that the council has approved our plans and we can get to work delivering new homes and commercial space for residents in West Thamesmead. These will be the first new Peabody homes to be completed in Thamesmead, hopefully in time for Christmas 2018.
"The new homes will be close to the town centre, in the area that will particularly benefit from the DLR coming across the river, and will be the first of more than 3,000 new homes to rent and buy in London's new town."
Overall, Peabody plans to develop around 1,000 new homes in Pettman Cresecent and Griffin Manor Way as part of the GLA's Plumstead and West Thamesmead Housing Zone which will be submitted for planning permission in 2017.
