Contractor CML has completed a major embankment repairs project in Northumberland.

The company was called in by Network Rail after a section of hillside near Farnley Haugh between Carlisle and Newcastle spilled onto the track in January.

The 10-month scheme included removing over 50,000 tonnes of soil and stabilising the embankment, as well as installing a new drainage system so water can run beneath the tracks. In addition, a gully was fitted at the top of the hill to catch water running off nearby fields.

Rob McIntosh, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "We do as much as we can to prevent incidents like this happening, even in extreme weather like last winter, and I am confident that the extensive work we have carried out will help avoid another landslip in this area in the future."
