A 'huge' fire has been brought under control at a construction site in Manchester.

Emergency services were called at 8.05pm to the Gorton site after the timber frame of the high rise flat complex caught fire on Sunday, 16 October.

Up to five fire engines attended the scene and a number of houses were evacuated due to the heat of the blaze.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the incident is well contained and spent most of the night damping down the blaze.

Incident Commander Ben Levy said: "At around five past eight this evening we received a large number of call, in excess of forty.

"The fire involves a large timber frame building and upon arrival our crews found the top two floors well alight. Given the fact it's timber framed and open to the elements the fire spread quite quickly."

An investigation is now underway into the cause of the fire.
