Plans have been approved to build a new road bridge over the River Mersey as part of the Stockport Interchange development.
Work on the structure and associated highways is expected to begin in 2017.
Once completed, the bridge will cross the River Mersey, joining Swaine Street to the south with Astley Street to the north.
Planning consent for the bridge marks the first phase of plans to build the transport interchange, which will link different modes of transport an improve access to, from and within Stockport.
Delivered in stages by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), features will include a secure cycle hub, toilets with adult and baby changing facilities, retail and café provision and clear travel information.
The development is part of a wider £1 billion programme taking place across the town to boost regeneration and attract further investment.
Chair of the TfGM Committee, Cllr Andrew Fender said: "This is an exciting time for Stockport - the bridge over the River Mersey will enhance accessibility through Stockport Town Centre by bus, on foot, and for cyclists.
"The new bridge paves the way for a fully-accessible interchange, which will transform a key gateway into the town centre and provide much improved facilities and links between modes of transport for passengers."
Cllr Kate Butler added: "It's great to see the initial stages of Stockport Interchange taking shape. When it is completed the interchange will make it easier for residents and visitors alike to travel in and around Stockport across a number of modes of public transport.
"The interchange is a vital part of improving connectivity to ensure everyone has easier access to the fantastic work, study and leisure opportunities on offer in our borough."
