Transport for London (TfL) has begun searching for contractors to deliver the £1 billion Silvertown Road tunnel project.

The organisation has issued a contract notice to deliver the new major river crossing between Silvertown and Greenwich Peninsula in east London.

The structure will comprise of a twin bore road tunnel alongside Blackwall Tunnel with connections to the A1020 Silvertown Way/Lower Lea Crossing at the north and to the A102 Blackwall Tunnel approach at the south.

The project aims to reduce congestion and improve road connections. User charging will also be introduced to manage demand and provide a source of revenue to help build/maintain the tunnel.

TfL will award the contract for the design, construct, finance and 30-year maintenance of the crossing. With construction scheduled to begin in 2018/19, the tunnel could become operational by 2022/23.
