Union UCATT has welcomed the Labour party's "radical policy" to create a genuine Living Wage if it is re-elected in the next general election.
During his keynote address at the party's conference today, 26 September, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell stated the next Labour Government will ensure "everyone will earn enough to live on" if re-elected.
"We will write into law a real Living Wage…. Independent forecasts have estimated this will be over 10 pounds an hour (in 2020)….We will end the scourge of poverty pay in this country once and for all," he said.
Brian Rye, Acting General Secretary of the organisation, said the "radical policy" would help end the "low pay misery" experienced by thousands of UK workers, including many in the construction industry.
"This policy demonstrates that Labour is reconnecting with ordinary workers and ensuring that the next Labour Government will ensure that no worker is left behind," he said.
