The UK Government's decision to proceed with the £18 billion Hinkley Point C project is "vital" for the construction industry, according to union Ucatt.

The organisation welcomed the approval for the nuclear power station development, which will create 25,000 jobs opportunities and 1,000 apprenticeship places over the project's lifetime.

Brian Rye, Acting General Secretary of Ucatt, said: "The go ahead was vital for the construction which desperately needed the confirmation of such a major project following a slowdown in the industry caused by the Brexit vote. It is also good news for the overall economy as it helps to guarantee the stability of our future energy supply."

UCATT added it will continue negotiating terms and conditions for the project's workforce.

Mr Rye added: "UCATT negotiators will be stepping up their meetings with the client and the tier 1 contractors to ensure that the excellent agreements already in place are fully delivered and further built upon."
